Strawberry Margarita On The Rocks
This strawberry margarita is fresh and fruity. It’s a simple shaken margarita with real strawberry flavor, made with homemade strawberry syrup. A freeze-dried strawberry rim adds a gorgeous pop of color and extra berry flavor.

About this strawberry margarita
The strawberry margarita on the rocks is a fruity twist on the classic margarita, made with tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice, and homemade strawberry syrup. It’s easy to make at home (no blender needed) and comes together in just a few minutes. The freeze-dried strawberry rim is optional but adds a fun touch that makes the drink feel a little special.
Unlike frozen strawberry margaritas, this version is shaken and served over ice, so it’s quicker to make and has a brighter flavor. The strawberry syrup gives you that gorgeous pink color and real fruit flavor without any bits of strawberry floating around in your glass. I use homemade strawberry syrup because it tastes so much better than store-bought, but if you’re short on time, any good-quality strawberry syrup will work. You can also muddle fresh strawberries directly in the shaker if you don’t mind a slightly chunkier drink.
Key ingredients and why
Method
- Crush the freeze-dried strawberries into a fine powder and mix with sugar on a small plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip it into the strawberry sugar to coat.

- Fill the glass with ice and pour over tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice, and homemade strawberry syrup.
- Give it a stir and garnish with a fresh strawberry or lime wedge.

Variations
- Spicy strawberry margarita: Add a few slices of jalapeño to the shaker before shaking. Smoky version: Swap the tequila for mezcal for a nice smoky depth.
- Frozen: Blend all the ingredients with ice instead of shaking for a slushy frozen margarita. Non-alcoholic: Skip the tequila and triple sec. Mix the strawberry syrup and lime juice with sparkling water for a strawberry lime spritzer.
Tips
- Use fresh lime juice. This is non-negotiable in my opinion! Fresh lime juice is bright and zesty, while bottled can taste artificial.
- Make the syrup ahead. Strawberry syrup keeps in the fridge for about two weeks, so you can make a batch and have margaritas ready to go whenever you want.
- Rim only half the glass. If you’re not sure you’ll want the sweet rim with every sip, just coat half of it. That way you can choose.
- Adjust to taste. Like it sweeter? Add more syrup. Want it more tart? Add a splash more lime. Taste as you go.
