The strawberry simple syrup is the secret ingredient in this variation of a classic spritz. This ingredient is exactly as it is described, simple and syrupy. It’s made by mixing water and sugar, and in this case, adding strawberries.

When paired with the classic spritz ingredients like Prosecco, bitters and soda water, this cocktail becomes the perfect summer cocktail.

Ingredients

Here is a rundown of what you will need:

  • 1 oz (30 ml) strawberry syrup: Making your own strawberry simple syrup is easy. Prepare it ahead of time so it has time to cool.
  • 3 fresh strawberries: Add a little texture and flavor.
  • 3 oz (90 ml) Prosecco: Prosecco is what gives the spritz its refreshing, celebratory feel.
  • 1 oz (30 ml) soda water: The soda water adds to the spritz and adds a bit of fizz that keeps the drink refreshing and easy to sip.
  • 2 dashes of aromatic bitters (e.g. Angostura bitters): This helps to balance the sweetness of the strawberries and Prosecco.
  • Ice cubes
  • Strawberry slice or lemon twist: For garnish.
  • Fresh mint leaves: For garnish (optional).

Instructions

  1. In a large glass, add the strawberry syrup and the fresh strawberries.
  2. Gently muddle the strawberries in the syrup until they release their juice and mix well with the syrup.

Variations

  • Swap strawberries for raspberries: Raspberries make a great substitute. You can make a raspberry simple syrup the same way and use that as the base.
  • Add a strawberry sugar rim: For an extra touch, coat the rim of the glass in a mix of sugar and freeze-dried strawberry powder. Run a lemon or lime wedge along the edge, then dip the glass into a small plate of strawberry sugar.
