Eggnog Mudslide

This eggnog mudslide is pure holiday indulgence. It combines rich, creamy eggnog with coffee and chocolate notes for a cocktail that tastes like a boozy dessert in a glass.

About this recipe

The eggnog mudslide is a holiday cocktail made with eggnog, vodka, coffee liqueur, and Irish cream. It’s a festive spin on the classic mudslide that swaps out the heavy cream for eggnog, adding warm, spiced flavor alongside the coffee and chocolate. It’s easy to make and perfect for anyone who loves creamy, dessert-style cocktails. If you enjoy a blushin Russian or an eggnog white Russian, this is the more indulgent next step.

You can use either homemade or store-bought eggnog here. Just keep in mind that not all eggnogs contain alcohol. Many store-bought versions are non-alcoholic, while homemade recipes often include rum, bourbon, or brandy. If yours already has alcohol in it, the cocktail will naturally be stronger, so you may want to reduce the vodka.

Just a few ingredients

  • Eggnog: The star ingredient. It replaces the heavy cream from a traditional mudslide and brings spices like nutmeg and cinnamon along with it. Homemade or store-bought both work well.
  • Vodka: Adds a clean kick without competing with the other flavors. A mid-shelf vodka is all you need here.
  • Coffee liqueur: Brings that rich, roasty coffee depth. Kahlúa is the classic choice.
  • Irish cream: Adds silky, sweet creaminess that rounds out the whole drink. Baileys is my go-to.
  • Chocolate syrup: Used to decorate the glass.

Method

  1. Drizzle chocolate syrup inside the glass or around the rim. Pop it in the freezer to chill while you mix the cocktail.
  2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the eggnog, vodka, coffee liqueur, and Irish cream. Add a handful of ice and shake vigorously for 15 to 20 seconds.
  3. Strain the mixture into your prepared glass over fresh ice.
  4. Top with whipped cream, sprinkle with ground nutmeg or chocolate shavings and add a cinnamon stick.

Variations to try

  • Frozen eggnog mudslide: Blend all the ingredients with ice for a frosty, milkshake-like version. Perfect for a holiday party.
  • Chocolate eggnog mudslide: Swap half an ounce of the coffee liqueur for chocolate liqueur to make it extra chocolatey.
  • Spiced mudslide: Use spiced eggnog or add a pinch of extra cinnamon and nutmeg for even more holiday warmth.
  • Eggnog espresso martini: If you love the eggnog and coffee combination but want something lighter, try this one instead.

Ingredients

  • 2.5 oz eggnog
  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur
  • 1 oz Irish cream liqueur
  • Ice

Serving

  • Whipped cream
  • Chocolate syrup for the glass
  • Cinnamon or nutmeg for topping

Instructions

  • Prepare the glass by drizzling chocolate syrup inside or around the rim. Chill the glass in the freezer while preparing the cocktail.
  • In a cocktail shaker, combine eggnog, vodka, coffee liqueur, and Irish cream. Add a handful of ice and shake well for 15-20 seconds until chilled.
  • Strain the mixture into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
  • Top with whipped cream, sprinkle with nutmeg or cinnamon.

Notes

  • Both homemade and store-bought eggnog work well. Homemade gives you more control over sweetness and spice.
  • If your eggnog already contains alcohol (like rum or brandy), reduce the vodka to keep the drink balanced.
  • For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free eggnog and a dairy-free Irish cream alternative.
  • To make a frozen mudslide, blend all the ingredients with a cup of ice instead of shaking.
  • Chocolate shavings make a lovely alternative to nutmeg on top if you want to lean into the chocolate flavor.
